Melandri was, for me, going to be the dark horse. Had him big time down for third or better

but the plonker - along with Rossi and Pedrosa - hung on to wets on a dry racing line while Capirossi etc. was gaining 7s per lap on him for 4 extra laps
At least as you say it made for a change and a more eventful race.
Also of note, the top 9 finishers were...... not on Michelin tyres. On the cold surface Michelin slicks achieved 9th, 13th, 14th etc. with even Rossi initially finding them unrideable.
Next one down under on Oct 14th. I may keep you posted on predictions if requested.
